Mucuna pruriens is a well-known aphrodisiac – the seeds are useful in increasing sperm count. It is a good nervine tonic – helpful in Parkinson’s disease. Mucuna pruriens, one of the popular Ayurvedic herbs, is also known as velvet bean, cowhage and Kapikachhu.

CONSTITUENTS

  • Amino acid Levodopa (L-dopa, L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine)
  • Alkaloids Mucinine, mucunadine
  • Triterpenes β-sitosterol, stigmasterol
  • Fatty acids Oleic, linoleic, linolenic, lecithin
  • crude protein ranged from 20-29 %, crude lipid 6-7%, total dietary fiber 8-10%, ash 3% and carbohydrates 50-60%.

INDICATIONS

Antioxidant
Mucuna pruriens has antioxidant properties.

Sexual enhancer, for impotence or erectile dysfunction Dopamine is a natural neurotransmitter that enhances sexual urge.Kapikacchu is a tonic to the whole ´sukra dhatu system treating low libido, infertility, impotence, spermatorrhoea, premature ejaculation.  It is the best sexual tonic for both male and female as described by the Ayurveda text book Bhavprakash and Charak.

Fertility and Infertility Treatment Mucuna pruriens help in spermatogenesis. Certain research says it increase semen in the infertile men. It correct levels of total lipids, triglycerides, cholesterol, phospholipids, and vitamin A, C, and E and corrected fructose in seminal plasma .Oligozoospermic patients recovered sperm concentration significantly, but sperm motility was not restored to normal levels in asthenozoospermic men.

Nerves  It contains L-dopa, an essential precursor of dopamine, it is a specific remedy for Parkinson’s disease. It is quite possible that the addition of mucuna pruriens herb to one’s Parkinson’s treatment regimen

Digestion Its digestive and antispasmodic function can help alleviate intestinal spasms, pain and gas. Its sara or flowing quality can help with constipation.

COMBINATIONS

* Ashwagandha, safed musali, shatavari, gokshura, frankincense for reproductive tissues.

* Brahmi, gotu kola, jatamansi, tagarah and gokshura for muscular and nervous spasm.

* Fennel, ginger, chitraka in digestive problems.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Indigestion problems and condition of Ama in the body

Use under the supervision of  physician as it enhance Levodopa

5–15g per day as powder or in a decoction, as directed by the medical practitioner
