Things to consider during Snehapan (Internal Oleation)

Oleation therapy

Snehapan / Panchakarma

Snehapana is the important treatment in Panchakarma therapy in Ayurveda. Snehapan is the way of pre-operative procedure of Internal Oleation (Snehan karma). It can be practiced in two ways. Primarily it is done as preoperative to create doshas utkles (Vitiation of bodily humour) with some plain ghee or medicated ghee as per operative procudure and patient conditions. It is done for Samana (Balancing Doshas)Treatment also. This therapy is done for the bodily purification as described in the literary book of Ayurveda under the supervision of experience medical practitioners.  Pre-operative procedure (Poorva Karma) is taken as very important part of all Panchakarma therapy. So some precautions should  be taken while performing these Snehapana procedure.

While doing rookshanakarma, symptoms like constipation, sleepness, dryness of mouth, scanty micturation, burning in eyes and extremities are observed. In such conditions, if specific treatment is required. Stop rokshana and process with Snehapana. Loose motion is another common problems. This is not a Samyaksnigdha Lakshana. In many patients it occurs in the first day. As it is a natural response. No specific treatment is required. Usually the loose motion stool subsides in the second day. If it persisits, stop Snehapana and rookshana as mentioned earlier.

Vomiting may be another common problems in some patients. This is not the Samyaksnigdha Lakshana. Vomiting immediately after/during the intake of Sneha is Dvista Chardi. Someone may be allergic with the Ghee with either smell and taste. Those patients should be excluded from Snehapana.

Agnimandhya leading to Ajeerna may be another common problems during Snehapana. Consumption of food items before digestion of sneha may cause this problem. Nausea and vomiting is observed after snehapana. People should not be forced to take food immediately before getting some appetite. Proper digestion of food should be done. Snehapan( Medicated Ghee) can be administered in the patient with high cholesterol also. There is nothing to worry it has no side effects. Patient should be counseling before performing the procedure. During snehapana fasting is usually advice before the Samyakasnigdha lakshana, so the proper amount of Energy (Kcal)needed to the body is taken for the body is taken from the Sneha and converted into energy  which is administered in the body. So there Sneha Part cannot work in the Cholesterol level. Still you can monitor the Cholesterol level.

Here are some simple practical tips for Snehapan.

  1. Do proper rookshana before Snehapana
  2. Select Plain ghee for Sodhana Snehapana
  3. Evaluate Lipid profile before and after the procedure of Snehapana
  4. Assure no appetite before Sodhana snehapana
  5. Continue the procedure till Samyakalakshana is attained
  6. First two days Matra (dose) may not be counted
