Home remedies are prepared in the same way and with the same purpose as other Ayurvedic Medicines. While preparing a home remedy, the main aim is to obtain the maximum therapeutic benefit while making it palatable. The manufacturing process in Ayurveda is very specific and plays an important role in the healing process for this reason. Effects should be made to follow instruction carefully. Some common methods of preparing home remedies are

Juice:

If the herbs are available fresh, it is possible to consume the juice. This may be taken from the leaves, stem of herbs. The parts of herb used are crushed or ground in a mortar and pestle to make a paste. This paste is put in a piece of cloth and squeezed to take out the juice.

Dose: One – two table spoonful

Powder:

Dried herbs are used for powder. The herbs are usually dried in a cool, shady and well ventilated place, although some herbs are dried in direct sunlight. The herbs are then ground into a fine powder and stored in a dry,airtight bottle. The powder may be taken with water or if specific with milk or honey.

Dose: half to one teaspoonful

Decoction :

A decoction is prepared by boiling the herbs in water  (ration: 1 part of  herbs to 16 parts water). The herbs are broken into pieces and soaked in water overnight. This mixture is then boiled until it reduces to one quarter the volume, filtered and stored in a glass bottle.

Dose: 2 tablespoon

Infusion:

Herbs are soaked in water to make an infusion (ratio 1 part of herbs to 8 parts of water). Hot infusion results from adding herbs to hot water or gently heating but not boiling mixture. Thus if steamed and taken internally. Herbal tea are the example of infusion. Also the honey can be added.

Dose: half to one cup

Paste:

A paste can be made from either fresh or dried herbs with flower, stem, leaves or bark are ground and mixed with water. Pastes are mainly used for external application in cases of wart, burns and swelling. The paste should be applied thick layer to the skin.

Tablets :

The herbs are dried separately and then mixed in powder from, in a fixed proportion water or herbal juice is added to this powder to make a paste. From which tablets of a specific size or weight are made. Tablets remain present for a longer time then juices, powder, paste or decoction.

Medicated Ghee or Oil :

These are cooked with herbal juice, decoction and or pastes. The ghee should be heated with the herbal mixture at moderate controlled temperature. High temp can easily burn the ghee or oil, destroying its properties and effectiveness. Medicated ghee and oils are used internally.

Dose: ½- 1 teaspoonful and externally for massage

  • Very nice alricte Boss. In my opinion to remove cough Ayurveda is the best solution. In our country people take the mixture of Tulsi leafs and Honey. It is very good for cough.
