Netra Vasti : Eye Rejuvenation Treatment

The process of keeping Medicated ghee or oil in the eyes for a certain period of time is called Netra Vasti (Akshi tarpanam).  It is the best purification & rejuvenation treatment of eye and sense organs. This procedure is useful in healthy as well as diseased people. In healthy people akshitapana is carried out to protect the eyes from degeneration due to the aging process and to improve the eyesight. The therapeutic effect is advocated for clients suffering from disease of the eye. The eye is considered to be a local route for drug administration. Thus akshi-tarpana gives desired results in clients suffering from eye disease.

Indications of Akshitarpana

  • Darkness infront of eye
  • Dryness of eye
  • Injury to the eye
  • Squint
  • falling of eye lashes
  • Blurring of vision
  • Orbital cellulites
  • Difficulty in opening & closing
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Glaucoma
  • Fifth cranial nerve atrophy
  • Opacity of cornea
  • Watering of eye
  • Painfull eye
  • Swollen eye
  • Stiffness of eye
  • Injury to the eyes

Treatment Procedure

Before undergoing Netra tarpana, the patient must be subjected to eliminatory procedures like emesis or purgation. The patient is made to lie on his/her back on the droni.  A gentle massage is done on the head, eyes and face before a frame is made around both eyes and a tank of flour paste, is made around the eyes. Medicated ghee is then poured gently into the tank over the patient’s closed eyes. After sufficient unction has been poured, the patient is made to open and close eyes intermittently for a period not exceeding five minutes. Repeat this process for minimum 7 days.

The procedure takes 15-25 minutes. Better to be done in evening time after sunset.
After the procedure you are advised to avoid the sun or other bright objects

Maha Triphala Ghrita/ Triphala ghrita is most common medicine for Netra Vasthi/Akshitarpanam.

This procedure is done in Ayurveda/Panchakarma Centres under supervision of experts.

    I am a senior live in the usa, left India about 50 years ago. I have early stages of Glaucoma and cattarct. I would like to improve my eye sight, currently using eye drops. I would also like to stop using glasses. I have practiced yoga for many years and like ayurveda. What treatment would you suggest for me. I can do it at home safely.
