Importance of Psychotherapy in Impotence

For almost all men in our society, sexuality is a central focus of their self-image and self-esteem. Their sexual functioning is a measure of their masculinity occurs when any inhibition or impairment of sexual functioning occurs.  You may find it embarrassing if you are having difficulty maintaining an erection, or finding it hard to ejaculate, but you are not alone. Many men have the same problem. As many as two and a half million men around the UK may have some sort of sexual dysfunction at any one time.Every man with experience occasional failure in erection due to several simple reasons. They quickly fear when they first experience such situation and the added anxiety results in psychogenic impotency.

Psychological reasons for sexual dysfunction may include:

  • Stress, which may be related to sex and or other parts of your life
  • Concerns about your current sexual relationship(s)
  • Depression and related fatigue
  • Any feelings of guilt about your sexual performance or your sexual health

Psychotherapy has been found to be very helpful in conjugation with medical approaches. Though the majority of causes of impotence are physical, there are usually accompanying psychological factors involved as well, IIA encourages men and their partners to seek the counsel of qualified psychotherapists. The American association of sex educators, counselors and therapists is devoted to the promotion of sexual health by the development and advancement of the fields of sex, therapy, counseling and education. Sometimes, several sessions of psychosexual counselling can be helpful if a man is due to receive medical or surgical treatment for ED. A counsellor can help guide a couple towards agreeing on treatment, or help them improve their sexual communication and lovemaking skills. This can either be psychosexual counselling to deal with sexual or relationship problems. Another option is cognitive behavioural counselling which is useful at treating anxiety or depression “ which may be causing your impotence. The technique of counseling and treatment may include the following methods

  • Reading books about sexuality.
  • Touching exercises designed to remove any pressure to perform during sex.
  • Practicing better sexual communication skills
