Ayurvedic treatment of hair loss

hair loss treatment

Hair loss is one of the most common problems faced by today’s generation who lead such hectic and stressful lives. Hair loss, thinning of hair and balding could be a result of excess of Pitta dosha in the body, which is caused by excessive intake of tea, coffee, alcohol, fried food, spicy food, oily food, meats and excessive smoking.

Excessive intake of medicines, low blood circulation, anemia, excessive exposure to sunlight, pollution, excessive consumption of alcohol, smoking, stress, anxiety, and mental tension also contribute to hair loss. Chronic diseases like typhoid fever, presence of dandruff or lice and hormonal imbalance may also lead to hair loss.
According to Ayurveda, body type and balance of the mind-body constitution are important factors in determining hair loss. Individuals having excess Pitta dosha face problems of hair loss and early graying of hair. Excess of Pitta dosha in the body is the chief cause of hair problems. Pitta is increased by excessive intake of tea, coffee, alcohol, meats and excessive smoking. Pitta is also aggravated by eating too much fried, oily, greasy, spicy, sour, and acidic foods.

Ayurvedic treatment considers the hair as a byproduct for bone formation. The tissues which are responsible for formation of bones are also responsible for your hair growth. Ayurvedic treatment for hair loss combines balanced diet, herbs, oil massage, meditation, aromatherapy, breathing and yoga.

Home Remedy

  • Always use a natural shampoo or soap to clean the hair. As most soaps and shampoos have chemicals, they might be the cause of your problem. Usually the chemicals have a heating effect, and increase Pitta locally. Amala (embilica officinalis), Shikakai (Acacia concinna) are very commonly used in India for washing the hair.
  • Oiling and massaging of scalp is very beneficial for stopping the hair loss. Use coconut oil or mustard oil at least three times in a week. Certain medicated oils like ‘Mahabhringraj oil’, ‘Amala oil’, and ‘Arnica oil’ are very useful. Put oil on the scalp, and massage gently in the roots of the hair.
  • Rub your scalp vigorously after washing the hair. It increases the blood circulation, and activates the sebaceous glands. Take the oil that contains vitamin E. Vitamin E prevents the hair fall and reduces the brittleness of hair and also cure the dry and flaky skin.
  • Daily application of coconut oil mixed with lime juice on the hair is also beneficial. Applying juice of green coriander leaves on the head is also good.
  •  Washing the hair with a paste of cooked Urad dal (black beans) and fenugreek (methi) 2-3 times a week, is also good.
  • A paste of licorice made by grinding it in milk can be applied in the bald patches. It induces hair growth. A paste of seeds of lemon and black pepper may also be applied on the bald patches.

Oil massage

Massage greatly improves the blood circulation, thus increasing the health of the hair and also scalp. Daily massaging the scalp for 5-10 minutes greatly stimulates the circulation. This is very essential for hair fall control.

  • Coconut hair oil: Massage your scalp with coconut oil at bedtime. It pacifies pitta and awards a comforting sensation.
  • Brahmi and Bhringraj oil: Massage of the scalp with these oils before sleeping prevents hair loss.
  • Vitamin E oil: Vitamin E hair oil is next in the league. It either slows down the hair fall or in many cases it just might put an end to hair loss completely. Not only does it strengthen weak hair, it effectively works on dryness of skin too.
  • Rosemary, stinging nettle, horsetail and birch: Regular massage with these herbs promotes hair growth and reduces hair loss.
  • Massage your hair with the oil that contains vitamin E. This greatly prevents or slows down the hair loss. Vitamin E oil strengthens fragile hair and also helps to prevent the dry and flaky skin.
  • Boil the lemon leaves in water, cool it and rinse your hair with it.

Diet

  • Every morning, eat a handful of white sesame seeds, because they contain sufficient amounts of magnesium and calcium that are essential for the growth of your hair.
  • Increase the intake of green leafy vegetables, milk, salads, fruits, and sprouts in your diet. Consume enough proteins, yeast, wheat germ, buttermilk, whole grains, nuts, soya beans, and milk.
  • Moderate intake of vitamins.
  • Alcoholic drinks have animosity with good hair so you must shun it to achieve the goal at hand.
  • Consume the foods that contain sulfur, zinc, vitamin-B complex, vitamin C and essential fatty acids.
  • Aloe vera: Befriend aloe vera juice. You can also take it with cumin almost thrice a day for about 3 months. After that, get ready for moments of glorifying hair!
  • A mixture of lettuce and spinach juice is good to drink to induce hair growth. The juice of alfalfa mixed with that of carrot, and lettuce juice is also good to take.
