Pregnancy and delivery are the two wonderful events in the life of a woman. During this stage of life, a woman needs a special care and attention. Ayurveda i.e science of life has addressed a set of healthy diet and lifestyle during this period. It consists of various diet and lifestyle which woman has to follow.   Also, Ayurveda creates support for the physical, mental/emotional and spiritual growth of the mother and the baby. Is it Safe to Massage in Pregnancy?

Yes, Abhyanga (Ayurvedic Massage) is safe, if done with due caution. Although, few expert advice no massage during the first trimester. Overall, light Abhyanga i.e gentle application of warm oil on the body is safe for most of the women. Also, regular oil application on the body is recommended to all as a daily ritual.

Why not to massage during Pregnancy?

There are many different types of Massage. Massage like deep tissue massage and hard massage are not suitable.  The especially pressure around the abdomen is dangerous.

  • Back massage: Lower back pain is common during pregnancy due to the pressure in the abdomen. So gentle back massage with Ayurvedic oil help to relieve back pain.
  • Breast massagehelps avoid stretch marks and keeps up the breast tone. In the 8th and 9th months, spend extra time on the nipples to prepare for nursing.
  • Foot massage: It helps to induce deep relaxation, improve sleep and avoid stress.
  • Head massage helps in relaxing mind, relieving anxiety.
  • Body massagehelps relaxation and strengthening of muscles, joints and bones. Relieves aches and pains.
  • Calf massage helps to relieve leg cramps.

Also it addresses many common discomforts associated with the skeletal and circulatory changes brought on by hormone shifts.
