Anti Dandruff Formula in Ayurveda

            When the cells of the scalp of the head excessively die and flake off, the condition is known as dandruff. The itchiness can be mild or severe depending on the amount of dandruff that is present. Dandruff may be a sign that circulation is blocked. Unhealthy diet, pollution, harsh shampoos, chemical treatments like coloring and straightening of hair tends to harm the scalp and can be considered as the major causes of dandruff. Dandruff is usually due to the overworking of the sebaceous glands. With dandruff, this whole process of skin renewal (or skin turnover) speeds up, so a greater number of dead cells are being shed.

According to ayurveda this is due to the pitta dosha. The use of diet that is having properties to pacify the pitta is beneficial in treatment of the dandruff and hair health. Ayurveda has specific treatments for maintaining healthy and beautiful hair free from problems. There is certain category of drugs that is called “Keshya”; hair health improvers.

Massaging of the scalp and hair with warm oil processed in the herbal decoction of Amla, Brahmi, Bhringaraj etc. This increases the blood circulation that improves the hair follicles and growth. The oil massage helps a lot in protecting the hair during winter. In the same way during summer regular shampooing helps to cleanse them form of the excessive dirt, pollution and sweat produced. Keeping this in mind can keep you far from dandruff.

Lemon: Rinse your hair after washing with 1-2 teaspoon of lemon juice mixed in water. Then thoroughly wash away your hair with clear water to make sure that no lemon particles are left within the hair. Apply this treatment thrice a week and see the difference.

Oil and black pepper: A very effective dandruff removal therapy. Mix 3 grams of black pepper in 300 grams of coconut oil and bring to boil. Keep this mixture in a jar or a bottle. Massage your scalp every night with this mixture to get rid of your itchy dandruffs.

Fenugreek seeds: Soak a few fenugreek seeds in water overnight. Apply the paste onto your head in the morning and wash it after an hour with a mild herbal shampoo. Fenugreek works best for people with vata or kapha doshas, he explains, and is less effective for pittas.  This is a very effective anti-dandruff herb and it will also help you with hair growth.

Function of Anti Dandruff Herbal Oil Formula

Tea tree essential oil ( Melaleuca leucodendron) has gained immense recognition as the strongest anti-fungal, antiseptic ,antidandruff properties,anti-viral and anti-bacterial essential oil. Tea tree essential oil is a popular addition to skin care formulations for its germ-killing properties.

Neem ,(Azadirachta indica ): Has an anti dandruff action.*

Rosemary( Rosmarinus officinalis) : Rosemary is an active ingredient of several head tonics and shampoos. It rejuvenates the scalp by keeping it moist and hence prevents dandruff. It is also used in the treatment of premature baldness.

Alfalfa (Medicago satina) The alfalfa has remarkable effect in the growth of hair. Its effects are much increased by the combination of carrots and lettuce with the alfalfa.

Ash Gourd (Benincasa hipsida)

The peel and the seeds of the ash gourd are very effective in the treatment of dandruff. Regular use can keep the scalp moist and livelier which will prevent dandruff.

Indian Hemp (Cannabis sativa)

The juice of the Indian hemp can reduce dandruff when it is applied directly over the scalp.

 Ayurvedic Treatment for Dandruff

Ayurvedic medicines that can be used for the treatment of dandruff.

1. For external application, Dudurpatradi tailam is prescribed.

2. Gandhaka Rasayana is used as an internal medicine for the treatment of dandruff.

3. Taking one teaspoonful of Brihat Haridra Khand in a glass of milk twice a day takes care of dandruff quite efficiently. Along with that, it also deepens the color of the hair.

4. Since dandruff can be due to the impurity of the blood, medicines must also be taken to purify the blood. In Ayurveda, Khadirarishta and Saribadyaasavam are taken for the purification of blood.
